Like Day and Knight for Dave

Dave Knight came to me last week looking to improve his driving consistency and distance. David's old 10.5reg driver was only launching the ball at 9.3 degrees, and had a high backspin rate of 3440rpm. I was ideally looking to get David launching it higher with less backspin to give him the optimum ball flight resulting in more distance. Those that play with Dave will know he hits the ball with a lot of curvature to the right, so perhaps a modern day driver with an adjustable face could help reduce that sidespin. After trying a few different drivers and lofts, it became apparent that the TaylorMade SLDR adjusted to 14 degrees loft with draw bias was giving David the best results. Amazingly, he gained 25 YARDS CARRY. This was done whilst also reducing the sidespin on the ball by 1119rpm's! So straighter, longer drives for David, who was a very happy customer!

Actual average numbers taken from the GC2 Launch Monitor.

If you're making do with a driver you weren't fitted for or that's some years old… book in today to see how much distance and accuracy you could gain. Click here for a booking or ring the AIZ on 0113 2689603

Is Time to Change Your Wedges?

I recently ran a small experiment with my new GC2 Launch Monitor. I was looking to see how older wedges with more worn grooves affect the amount of spin you get on the ball. The results were quite dramatic, with the new wedge generating an average just shy of 6,000rpm, the used wedge generating just shy of 5,000rpm, and the well-used wedge generating just over 3,000rpm!

When we hit wedges, the backspin generated is crucial to giving us the control that we need. With that in mind, the rates found from the experiment should be alarming to you if you're playing with some older wedges. The grooves get worn and this has the same effect as getting some grass caught between the club and ball at impact. This creates a shot where the ball will pitch, and then continue to run out. This is all good and well with the driver when we want distance, but with the wedge shots we are looking for control and accuracy.

Think of it like this - when did you last see a pro on TV play a wedge shot from 40+ yards that didn't spin back or 'check-up?' This allows them to negate any chance of an unlucky bounce as they can fly the ball to the hole. If you feel you're not able to be as aggressive as you'd like on your wedge shots, we can check your lofts and spin rates on our new GC2 launch monitor. Furthermore we have a wide selection of wedges with varying bounce and loft angles to suit all golfers. As ever we will be happy to talk you through the process and explain what will best suit your game - please feel free to ask for our help when you're next in the shop or click here to send me an email.

Wedge Demo Day and 'Pitch it Close' competition.

Here's a day for your diary! On Saturday 24th of May from 11pm to 2pm the AIZ will be hosting a Wedge day! If ever you've wanted to know anything about the wedges you currently have, or where your wedges may be letting you down… today's the day!

We will have lots of Demo Wedges, the GC2 Launch Monitor and the Loft & Lie Machine out there as well as myself, Joe or Jack to talk you through why your wedges do what they do.
SO…
If you want to know the lofts on your wedges… This is the day for you!
If you want to know the gaps in between your wedges… This is the day for you!
If you want to know the distances you hit your wedges… This is the day for you!
If you want to know how much you spin your wedges… This is the day for you!

We will also be holding a 'Pitch It Close Competition' and giving out the odd tip on how to improve your short game, to those who attend.

John Swarbrick Wins the First Hartley Trophy.

With the AGM due to start at 5:15, 50 of Alwoodley's finest players tee'd of in the new Hartley Trophy, the former Green Tee Stableford hoping to make plenty of birdies to take the prize. With the weather misbehaving in the morning the afternoon tee times looked certain to produce a winner. John Swarbrick took the prize with 42 points playing the best he has played since joining as a member. The 16 handicapper played an amazing front nine of two over par which included 1 birdie and 3 bogeys for 24 points. The back nine was looking equally as consistent until a five over par nine on the 15th hole blemished what would have been a perfect round. John then proceeded to score seven more points on the last three holes to finish with 18 points on the back nine and 42 points overall.

In second place on count back with 41 points was Steve Pearson. Steve managed a steady 20 points on the front nine with a blob, and then an impressive 21 points on the back nine with an incredible streak of six straight four's on holes 11 to 16 left him one point short of victory. In third place was low handicapper Dan Murphy. Dan tee'd off at about quarter past seven and faced the worst of the weather, but despite this managed a great 41 points. With only one birdie on the front nine, Dan then turned on the magic with six consecutive three's on holes nine to 14 and returned in a gross 32. Fantastic golf!

Well done to all those that took part in the competition and scored so well and congratulations to John Swarbrick on his first competition win at Alwoodley.

Ladies April Stableford

In what was arguably the worst possible weather conditions for golf, the ladies of Alwoodley went out to do battle in the monthly stableford. Unsurprisingly the ladies survived the weather well and scoring was still great in both divisions. Julie Gray came out on top in the 1st division with a great 37 points bringing her handicap down to 14. Morag Ross and Debbie Howarth also had good scores of 36 and 35 points respectively. Morag also doing a good job to get her handicap reduced back down to seven. In the second division Sarah Watson took the top spot with 32 points. Jane Wainman and Joyce Storer finished 2nd and 3rd with 28 and 29 points each.

Well done to all the ladies that went out to play in the adverse conditions and congratulations on Julie and Sarah on winning their divisions.

Hazel Crawford Returns To Winning Ways

It was fantastic to see Hazel Crawford win the Ladies Green Tee Stableford last Tuesday. Hazel and I have been trying to make some small changes to her swing with a view to gaining a few more yards so theAlwoodley's tee carries weren't a problem. We have lengthened the backswing and also lengthened the follow through to increase the club head speed. The images below show what we have achieved so far.

5. On the Course

These sessions are a great opportunity to learn a new skill, meet other lady golfers and forge new friendships.

Some of the comments after last years sessions were very positive and pleasing:

"I have been one of six new lady golfers under John's tutelage over the past couple of months. After years of showing no interest or appetite for golf, despite my husband's pestering, I did not expect either to enjoy it or be gripped by the game. Having finally been persuaded to try, John's expert coaching, encouragement and support for us all has completely won me over. More than anything he has made it fun to participate and has provided the impetus for me to continue further. John has put in a terrific amount of thought and effort into the sessions and made us all (as have the Alwoodley lady members) feel very welcome at the club. I might even have improved along the way!!"
Janet Ledger

"Over the last year I have had both individual and group lessons with John. I am a complete beginner at golf so I was very relieved to find a group of friends who were of a similar standard. The lessons have been firstly great fun, instructive and taylor made to each individual. John is very encouraging and the lesson notes he provides give very clear instructions as to what we should be aiming to achieve. The beginner lessons are excellent value and have given me the confidence to continue trying to conquer this game! Thank you John for the very enjoyable lessons , taking up golf has been one of my best New Year resolutions!"
Rosey James

The cost for the course of five sessions is £50.00
