Stumps, Logs & Chippings If you’ve played recently you can’t fail to have noticed that our hard working greenkeepers have been spending a lot of time with chainsaws. This has really opened up some areas on the course and I think it all looks great. However with lots of wood chippings, logs lying on the ground and tree stumps I thought I would guide you on the status of these according to the rules. What do I do if my ball is up against a recently cut tree stump? The tree stump is part of the course and the ball should be played as it lies or the player could take a penalty drop. So Rule 28 ‘Ball Unplayable’ Could Apply What do I do if my ball is next to a recently cut down log? Recently cut down logs will be deemed an Obstruction. The log may be moved but if it can’t be moved it would then become an Immovable Obstruction. So Rule 24 ‘Obstructions’ Applies. What do I do if my ball is on wood chippings? Wood chippings left in a pile by the greenkeepers to be removed later is deemed as GUR and relief may be taken. Otherwise the ball must be played as it lies. So Rule 25 ‘Abnormal Ground Conditions’ Could Apply. I hope this helps. Please don’t hesitate to pop into the shop if you are unsure on any situation.
