Over the Rainbow & Into the Sun With the mixed weather of late it’s no surprise we had a rainbow on Sunday so I thought I would share it with you. Look at the sunrise first thing on Tuesday.

Patrick Bousfield’s Solution Like most of us, Patrick Bousfield was looking for a driver that would nudge him further down the fairway that didn’t break the bank. On the course, Patrick had tried a ‘previously enjoyed’ Callaway Big Bertha driver which was a great price, but just didn’t do the job. Before he went any further I suggested we got out on the range with the GC2 Launch Monitor to get some numbers so I could professionally advise him. After a few shots with his old faithful PING driver and with the regular shafted Callaway I thought I had a good chance to beat both. After a bit of trial and error the best fit was the Titleist 917 D2 Driver set at 9.75 degree loft with some draw bias and a Lite shaft. The numbers below tell the story. With the PING Patrick was hitting the ball too high with too much side spin and back spin. The Callaway was a smidge better, but the side spin and back spin were draining the distance. A lower launch added to less side spin and less back swing made the Titleist a winner and when I mentioned it was on offer Patrick was cock-a-hoop! Click here to request your fitting. |
The AIZ Essential Winter Coaching Package It’s that time of year for The AIZ Essential Winter Coaching Programme, as many of you know over the last few of years I have offered this package and you will have read about the success stories and greater enjoyment that golfers have gained from coaching at the AIZ. Click here to view the programme. Jez Wostenholme shooting his career low competition gross score, Hunter Kelly winning his first competition at AGC, Chris Brown’s handicap down from 14 to 12, Dan Murphy making it to the final of the Scratch Knockout and the final of the Crawford Trophy, Chas Newstead achieving a career low handicap, Dave Sparke, achieving a career low handicap to name a few of the success stories Jacob and I have had this year.

This is what Dan had to say about the programme: “The winter coaching programme gave a sense of purpose to my golf over the long off-season months. It also provided an incentive to practise in between the lessons because I had something to work on. A little often is a great way to learn for me so a series of half-hour lessons was just right. We established a plan before we started in the warmth of the card room and that gave us structure for the months ahead. John and I worked on parts of my game that had been a long-term weakness because we had the time to get to the root of the problem rather than make do with a patch-up fix." The programme will start from the 1st November. However, places are strictly limited so please don’t be disappointed sign up now. Click here to request your spot.

Are you Autumn / Winter Ready? On Sunday I dragged Gill Green away from her AIZ admin work load to merchandise the shop and what a good job she has done. She has brought to the front some of the Autumn/Winter clothing that we have. These include the smart and warm AGC crested Glenmuir Eltham Pullover, the modern and toastie PING and Galvin Green Base Layers, the trendy and practical Cross Utility Jackets. Please pop in and have a look, we look forward to seeing you.

Crawford Trophy In March 61 teams set out to win the Crawford Trophy, seven months later and there was just two contesting the final, played last Monday. Top teams like Richardson & Phillips and Gilchrist & Smith were swept aside in the semi-finals by the finalists, Graham Strange & Steve Wales and Tom Irwin & Dan Murphy, so a high quality match was guaranteed. And so it turned out with the match going to the 17th where Graham and Steve took the trophy 3 & 1. Well played chaps, that’s a Silver Spoon for you two at the Mens’s Dinner on the 2nd November.

Mid-Week Stableford. If you remember last Wednesday we were in the middle of a storm ‘Bronagh’. 40-50 mph winds, lashing rain and cold. This meant that we only had six intrepid golfers that entered the Mid-Week Stableford and I have to tell you they all scored pretty well despite the conditions. Mark Inman with 30pts took bronze, Ed Smith with 32pts took silver, but Gold was awarded to Garry Cuthbert who knocked it round in a quite amazing 73 gross for 35pts. Garry’s win was cemented by pars on the last five holes, all played in to the teeth of a gale. Just another day at the office for Garry! FYI Neil MacAndrews sacrificed his score and entry to mark yet another winning scorecard, not sure what to say!

The Bousfield Trophy After achieving a mini ambition of getting down to 1 handicap to give him a chance of playing in the North of England Champs at AGC next week, Garry Cuthbert, with partner 3 handicap Chris Gray set about winning the Bousfield Trophy. With three holes to play they had the trophy in their hands as they had already secured 33 points and were one under gross. However, the 16th bit them and nil points went on the card. They did manage pars on the last two for 37pts. This left the very first players on course Gordon Gilchrist and Richard James to take the honours by virtue of a better back nine of 19pts. Surprising to some, they were a picture of consistency as they didn’t have less than two pointers over their last 13 holes, awesome foursome play chaps. We have had some big numbers achieving twos in recent comps so it was a surprise to see that Will Shucksmith and Dave Mather scored the only two on the day to scoop the pot.

Ladies Rose Thompson Final Debbie Howarth has not had much luck in finals recently. I think her opponents know she is a great competitor and simple raise their game accordingly. This time it was Hilary Sewell playing some great golf to beat Debbie and win the Rose Thompson Trophy.
|
Ladies Fenton Trophy As storm ‘Bronagh’ was building up steam Diana Finan was plotting her way around the course and a brilliant nett eagle at the last catapulted her to the top of the pile to win the Fenton Trophy. Diana has been threatening this for some time and she was rewarded by a long overdue handicap cut from 32 to 29. Carol Briggs took second spot with a great nett 73 that included four net birdies. Well played Diana and Carol.

Ladies Bronze Scratch Knockout Jo Denby’s time as Lady Captain is fast running out, but she has still had time to play some great golf. On Monday she took on Jane Wainman for the second year running in the Bronze Division Scratch Knockout Final. Last year Jane was the victor but this time Jo came through to win. Well done Captain Jo.

Winter Foursomes 2018/19 - Turnbull Trophy Entries for the winter foursomes are now being taken on the competition computer in the pro shop and in the clubhouse. Entries close Sunday 30th September with the first round matches scheduled to be played by Sunday 4th November 2018. |
| John | It’s very important to have the same routine before every shot! |
| Jacob | Lift the heel of your wedge up slightly for shorter chips, the club will be less likely to grab the grass. |

New irons to improve your game |
Buying a set of clubs is exciting, but can be a tricky decision - you might love the look of the short irons, but feel a bit daunted by the longer clubs further up the set. However, you can always mix and match your clubs so that your long irons are more forgiving and your short irons are more workable, allowing you to strike approach shots from any distance with confidence. |
Mix & match with Wilson Staff Why not try combining Wilson Staff's C300 long irons with its C300 Forged short irons? The C300 has increased forgiveness, thanks to five Power Holes strategically placed around the clubface, as well as a medium topline to boost confidence at address. This all points towards them being much easier to hit, helping you improve the accuracy and striking of your long irons. Combine this with the C300 Forged short irons, which have a thinner topline for enhanced workability and better control further down the set, and you'll be peppering the pin from every yardage imaginable. |
