Breakfast Competition
Lizzy Bousfield came up with another cracking format that tempted 11 teams to enter the Breakfast Competition last Sunday. It was named The Alwoodley Shamble. In this format, all players drive then choose the best drive and then all players finish the hole with their own ball from this spot - brilliant. |
So, with the best drive being chosen on each hole, you would expect some awesome scoring and so it turned out with the Kinseys and Crawfords shambling their way round to 94 points, 22 under par. They were looking like scoring a few more but they could only manage one point between them on the last hole! However, this one point proved decisive because there was another amazing team out there. The Durbins, with the Carrolls also scored 94 points but they were beaten on a count back. After this event, Lizzy Bousfield stepped down as Breakfast Competition organiser to focus on her new role of Ladies Competition Secretary and master of ceremonies Steve Ledger thanked her for her hard work in building this event up over the last couple of seasons. Three cheers for Lizzy!

Frozen Fingers A quick reminder that the Frozen Fingers qualifying started on Monday 1st October. If you’re unsure of what that is, or how it works, here’s the information you need: From Monday 1st October until the end of March 2019, lady members have the option of entering as many Frozen Finger Red Tee Medal cards as they wish in any course condition, such as frost greens or forward tees. All you need to do is hand the card to the Pro Shop after your game. If the aggregate of your best two medal scores is in the top eight at the end of March, you qualify for the Match-Play stages played through the Summer. This is a great competition that gives you an incentive to play more throughout the winter months. Debbie Howarth has got off to a flyer with 71 and 76 already for an aggregate of 147. Helene Manchester is currently in second spot on 154. So there’s a lot to play for. |
Winter Winds A quick reminder that the Winter Winds qualifying started on Thursday 1st November! If you’re unsure of what that is, or how it works, here’s the format: From the Thursday 1st November until the end of March 2019, gentlemen members have the option of entering as many Winter Winds qualifying medal cards as they wish, by paying 50p in the Pro Shop prior to playing. If the aggregate of your best three medal scores is in the top 16 at the end of March, you qualify for the Knockout stages played through the Summer. This competition is a fantastic opportunity to spend some time out on the course improving your game over the winter months. The pick has to be last year’s match play runner up Steve Ellis’s gross 67 nett 64 but even with this score in his best three he hasn’t got to the top. As it stands Richard James, who is somehow still off 11 handicap has shot 65, 67 and 72 = 204 to lead Steve by three. Lurking ready to pounce is Matthew Gribbon with 139 from two cards and Jim Gribbon and Neil Crowther who have both shot 66 with their first counting score. Don’t miss out, this is a great competition and there is loads of time for you to get into the top 16. |
Double-Triple-Double Up
This Saturday sees the third extravaganza event in my Winter Series. This time it’s the Double-Triple-Double Up. You may remember this one but, if not, the format is as follows: 18 Holes. Stableford. Full Handicap. Before playing, players choose two sets of three holes where their points will be doubled, so pick your holes wisely! For example, you could pick (2,3,4 and 11,12,13).
There will be a Two's Competition included too. Last year’s winner was John Swarbrick with an incredible 55 points. Peter McWilliams was runner up with 51 points and Jim Dickson was third with 47 points. So, it looks like a competition for those with a sombrero… |
The Pro’s Winter Series Order of Merit
The winners of the first two events, Richard Hunt and Andy Harris are tied at the top of the Order of Merit with 20 points each. However, there are a number of players, Frances Carroll, Paul Turner and Peter Swaine to name three, who with a win this weekend could jump to the top. Just behind them are the only two players who have scored points in both events. So, will the consistent approach succeed for Paul Turner and Andy Wilson? Either way, it’s great to see so many of you have a go at these competitions! I hope I will see plenty of you on Saturday. Click here to view the lastest Order of Merit standings. |

[* END *] Pace of play I have a simple new motto for all groups on the course, regardless of number in group. ‘If they are faster than you – let them through’ |
New rules explained This week, it’s the Flagstick and Double Hitting… Double hitting There will no longer be a penalty for double-hitting a shot. You will simply count the single stroke you took to strike the ball, rather than counting two shots for hitting the ball twice. Great news for one or two members... not mentioning any names… The flagstick. The flagstick no longer has to be attended or removed when making a stroke from on the putting green, and there will be no penalty if you hit a flagstick that has been left in the hole. |
We all want to emulate our golfing heroes. From the shots they manage to hit on the course to the latest apparel they wear with such great style, we'd give anything to be in their shoes for a day. Whilst the former might take a little longer to accomplish, you can certainly look like them in an instant. |
The ProQuip Pro-Flex EVO jacket is one of the most stylish products on the market today. Its classic design will have you looking extremely sleek out on the course, plus it's packed with golf-specific technology such as four-way stretch and Teflon coating for complete waterproofing you can trust. What's not to love? |
