Green Tee King Strikes Again

Michael O'Brien proved once again why he is such a formidable opponent on the green tees. The Centenary bowl finalist produced some dazzling golf in some quite hideous conditions to beat Gordon Rycroft into second spot.

The score of 36 points was very impressive, but Michael left it late to card this score. A quite fantastic last 8 holes in which he carded 19 points is what made the difference and shot him to the front, well played!

Next up for Michael is the Centenary Bowl final against an equally solid opponent in Giles Manchester. Good luck to both!

Junior Eclectic

The Junior eclectic has hotted up in recent weeks with front runner Oliver Larking pipped and headed by the Gribbon brothers. Matthew Gribbon is the very finest of margins ahead of Jonny in what looks to be a thrilling contest.

Fitting gives Dave extra yards and more consistency

Dave Watson has been using his PING G10 driver for a few years and recently thought he would put the AIZ and the latest technology to the test to see if a more consistent driver could be found. So armed with a few different options and the state of the art GC2 Launch Monitor we made our way to the range. After hitting a few shots with the G10, with the help of the GC2 I could tell that David was launching the ball pretty low and with too much back spin. I recommended that a regular shafted driver with 14.5 degrees of loft would give greater consistency and could even add a few yards of carry. So we tried the TaylorMade JetSpeed and the Callaway X2 Hot drivers both set to my suggested specification. The results can be seen below and the important numbers for Dave were the side spin and the carry. The carry was up by 20 yards with each club and the side spin was substantially down with each club. The factors that encouraged these results were the much increased launch angle and the reduction in back spin.

After hitting a few more shots with each club Dave opted for the Taylor Made as it sounded more solid. So the AIZ strikes again. If you would like to challenge us to find a better club for you game please click here.

Practice Range Safety

Range CuttingIt is great to see that the practice range at Alwoodley is now a very popular place and I hope you will agree with me that it is a very good facility. In summer the green keepers need to cut the grass on the range once a week and to minimise disruption they do this at first light. This however means that we are forced to close the range normally at around 4.00pm to allow for a full pick up that can take up to two and a half hours the night before.

As we don't have a protected buggy when collecting balls my first priority is to keep Joe, Jack and I safe when collecting balls so would ask all members to heed the 'Practice Ground Closed' sign and never hit balls up the range when we are collecting.

Unfortunately due to weather conditions, green keepers rosters and Pro shop rosters I can't give you a set day each week but it does seem that we clear the range mostly on a Tuesday evening. Many thanks.

Lost Club?

With the rough getting to a fantastic length, now more than ever is the time for a club to get mislaid and perhaps lost in the long stuff. With this in mind, we'd like to remind all golfers of the procedure should you find a club on the course. Ideally, the club would be handed in to us in the pro shop after play so we can identify the user or at the very least pop it in our lost property bag. Should you take it home by accident however, a call to the pro shop would be great so we at least know its whereabouts when we get asked.

This Saturday 11th Oct - Greenkeepers Revenge Day

This always fun but sometime cruel competition sees the start of my Winter Order of Merit events. With Philips help I will be seeking out some dastardly, some deadly and some downright unfair pin positions for you to er… enjoy.

Alwoodley's Corporate Golf Day

Ron Harris and his team proved victorious in this years AGC Corporate Day! The format was two players to count on every hole, with three counting on holes 8, 9 and 10. Ron's team, who were playing for 'Search Laboratory' JUST managed to pip Neil Crowthers 'Ardent UK team into second spot by a point (81 points to 80). Third home was Paul Cotton's 'Eversheds' team with 79 points.

A very closely fought competition then and a really enjoyable day! The presentation after was well attended with the odd tipple consumed alongside some lovely food courtesy of Phillip.

Well played and thanks to all that entered. Next year we will be replacing this with a brilliant competition currently being formatted with Moortown GC. 36 holes in one day (2 x shotgun starts) at Alwoodley and Moortown with lunch and meal afterwards, anyone?!

White Tee Medal

It may have been a damp and miserable morning, but we still had a good number turn up for the White Tee Medal (nutters!). It was ultimately Garry Cuthbert who continued his superb season with another victory, courtesy of a gross 74, nett 71. Garry was out in one under gross and back in three over, which has cut his handicap once again, now playing from two. It typifies a quite brilliant year from Garry. Several big performances in the monthly medals/stablefords, and long runs in the club knockout competitions. Well done that man!

Second home was another low handicapper, Nick Richardson with a nett 74. Nick was disheartened post round with his putting letting him down and he thought there were two or three shots left out there. Even with this disappointment, Nick still took second spot and got a handicap chop to four, so not all bad! Paul Cotton continued his fine form from the 'Corporate Day,' and much like Nick felt he hit it better than he scored. A nett 76 with some big scores meant that with stableford adjustments, Paul got cut to 10, from 11. A shame about the finish but certainly a sign of what's to come if Paul can continue to get his game in gear.

Crawford Trophy

With the Sunday sun out, Julie & David Gray were teeing it up against Neil McAndrews & Jez Wostenholme for the final of the Crawford Trophy.

Julie got the match off to a cracking start, smashing the first tee shot arrow straight down the middle (pictured above,) and in the early stages it was all Julie and David as they went 2 up through a handful of holes. But back fought Neil & Jez to be A/S through 9 with some scintillating golf. Even birdies were proving not enough to get halves as David managed a nett eagle on the 8th!

On the back 9 the great golf continued and nobody could get more than 1up. This continued until the 18th where Jez and Neil managed to just hold on to win it down the last. There were only 3 halved holes in the entire match which shows quite how ridiculously up and down this final was - what a great way to end the tournament! Well played to both pairs.

Callaway X2 HOT

As of now we're running a promotion on all Callaway X2Hot woods and hybrids. This range has been superb this season and at the adjusted prices are offering amazing value to anyone looking to improve distance/consistency on their long game.

Below you can see the brilliant savings that can be made and as ever, we at the AIZ offer the full custom fitting process in the prices outlined below.

Hopkins wins the Alwoodley Challenge Cup

After some tough games to reach the final, Bobbie Till and Jilly Hopkins contested for the Challenge Cup last week and those of you that know the finalists will know what a good quality final this was going to be. In the end Jilly played some great golf to take the title. Both players have had some help from the AIZ recently so it was great to see you both do so well.

iPadGC2 Proving to be a Massive Success

After investing in a state of the art launch monitor earlier this year, I can safely say this has been one of the best golfing purchases I've ever made. Instant feedback to the Ipad Aire lets me communicate very simply to the player why we're seeing the shot distance/curvature that we're seeing. From here it's a case of trying other clubs as comparisons and chatting through the figures we see so that the player is on the same page and not in the dark.

This has really revolutionised the fitting process and leaves no stone unturned. If you'd like to improve your golf with a set of custom fit clubs/woods then click here.

Immediate visual feedback in all lessons.

Visual AidThe iPad Air together with the excellent V1 golf app is also something I will be using in the vast majority of my lessons. It allows me to give you, immediate visual feedback and comparisons with professional's swings whilst actually on the range with you.

This has already proved a success and has made it even easier to show golfers the desired swing positions we're trying to get to, and how we can do it.

Add this to brief post lesson e-mailed notes and you have an unbeatable combination.

I look forward to helping you improve your golf, to book a lesson or custom fit please click here.

Young Guns Academy with the Golf Foundation Junior Golf Passport.
Our junior coaching on a Saturday morning is undergoing a big change! To help get our juniors to the 'next level' quicker, we're changing the format from an hour long group lesson, to 30 minute individual lessons. This means that with the help of the Golf Foundation Junior Passport Scheme we can make the coaching specific for the needs of the junior at hand.
The Junior Golf Passport covers the following key areas of golf:

The price for a half hour lesson is £10.00 (Under age 12) can be booked at your convenience and can be taken any day/time (as long as we have a member of staff free). This should hopefully be more convenient as we know some of you struggle to stick to the 10am Saturday time as you have other commitments.
