Greetings from John Green

Challenge the Pro

Last Saturday was the Challenge the Pro competition. The format was a simple full handicap Stableford with one little twist. I'd be playing in the afternoon and if you bettered my score you got a share of the pot. After a few good years in this event I must admit I was feeling the pressure a little bit after not playing so well in the Capt & Pro's match earlier in the week.

The best score on the day went to Bob Davis, who produced a dazzling display to take the top spot and the plaudits. Bob scored 41points in a really encouraging display that comes handily right at the start of the season. This sparkling round put Bob two points ahead of a chasing pack of eager would-be winners.

Coming home tied second were Rick Hartley, John Swarbrick, David Sparke, All of whom scored 39 points. Read about how these results drastically affected the final standings in the Professionals Winter Order of Merit later on

Well, I have delayed telling you my score for long enough! I had a bad day at the office and scored 27 points. I remember the couple of occasions in the past when I beat every one and I suppose I was a little too eager to rub it in, well I think I got my comeuppance on Saturday! My apologies to Bob Davis as his 41 points earned him the same as those on 28 points - £3.80. However thanks very much to all that played, I hope you enjoyed the competition.

Winter Order of Merit - FINAL STANDINGS

Well done to Bob Davis - he took home the spoils in this year's Winter Order of Merit courtesy of the victory in last week's comp. Bob went in to the round in tied third with two other players, after completing his round it became apparent the only man that could topple him was Giles Manchester, who came up just short.

Second in the race was Andy Candlish. Andy led going into the final round but unfortunately couldn't make it. Andy actually did well to hold on to second as there were numerous permutations that would have had him headed, but luckily for Andy they didn't flourish. Third home was David Sparke. David's really hit some brilliant form of late and after playing with him on Monday I can safely say this is a man to avoid in the knockout comps! Another great showing this week meant David leapt up to third and took home a share of the spoils. Fourth place went to Giles Manchester. After winning a couple of big events last year, Giles is hoping for a repeat this year. Often seen on the range, Giles is one of the players who practices most, so it's great to see him getting what he deserves.

And in the final money spot, we have Antony Briggs. Some very solid play throughout all of the events has led to a fifth place spot out of some 60+ players - well played to all of you!

Yorkshire 'V' Rest of the World

This Saturday sees the last event in the Professional's Winter Competitions, Yorkshire 'V' The Rest of the world. It's a great one to participate in, with plenty of banter between the two crowds. Last year the mighty Yorkshire won 178 - 175. As a born and bred Yorkshireman I expect a wider margin victory this year!

Ladies Scratch Team Coaching

On Monday I had the pleasure of coaching some of the candidates for this years Ladies Scratch Team. Team Captain, Julie Gray suggested that some on the course match play tips would be useful. So I set about creating match play situations and scenarios on the first and 18th holes. It was great fun and I am confident it will be valuable in the matches this year.

The image below demonstrates a tricky chip over the bunker on the 18th.

Lady Members Day

We had a great Tuesday this week in which the Lady members congregated for a special 12 hole competition mixed with some on-course tips from Joe & Jack. The format was a Greensome Stableford and there was some fantastic golf played which resulted in Morag Ross and Blanche House winning with 28 points, followed home by four teams with 26 points! The pair that came second on countback was Glad Cooke and Gerry Durbin ahead of Sally Johnson & Sarah Watson and Sue Mason & Vicki Moss.

Captain & Pro Challenge

Bill and I played the eighth game in our series of matches and the challengers were two canny performers, Paddy Dent and Tipper Wilson.

After net birdies from Bill on the third, sixth, and ninth we found ourselves two up on the 10th tee and feeling good. But Tipper and Paddy had other ideas as they played the next five holes in two under to level the match stood on the 15th tee. Paddy sensing the challengers were getting on top hit a killer fairway wood to 15 feet to make a great par, which Bill and I couldn't match. On the 16th Tipper decided it was his turn to shine as he almost holed his third shot to be given a six inch putt for a net three and a win to go two up. It seemed that these two master strokes sapped mine and Bill's energy as we collapsed on the 17th. So the challengers won 2&1.

Thanks for the game and well played Tipper and Paddy, you played some great shots just when you needed them.

SkyCaddie, the best Distance Measurement Devices

We've just received in the brand New SkyCaddie Touch as well as some SkyCaddie watches and Aire's. This now means we have a fantastic array of price points and options to suit all golfers in their pursuit of more all-round accuracy. These devices are the type of things you will use twice and then wonder why/how you ever played without one before. They take the guesswork out of your distances and result in better scores.

- The SkyCaddie Touch is a precise GPS device that can improve all aspects of your game. It gives you all the features you can imagine, from the slopes on the green, to the distances to a bunker.

- The SkyCadde Lynx watch gives the player distances to the front middle and back, as well as distances to lay up short of hazards. This is a nice advanced watch for somebody looking to work on their course management and distance control.

- The standard SkyCaddie watch gives distances to the front middle and back and keeps everything nice and simple. No need to click any buttons, this will change as you start to play the next hole.

- The SkyCaddie Aire 2 comes with distances to the front, middle and back as well as distances to the lay ups. Unlike the watches, this is best used by clipping it to your golf bag. The clips come with the Aire though, so no worries on that front.

Callaway XR and XR Pro

We've now got the new (and brilliant) XR and XR Pro series in the shop. These replace last year's X2Hot series which sold amazingly well because of their great distance and forgiveness. Well, if you thought the X2Hot was good, then you're going to need to try the XR range…

When tested with the 'robotic arm,' the XR's shortest hit went further than the best hit shot from the X2Hot. That's tested from strikes all over the clubface and it is the first time Callaway have ever experienced this change in a single club update.

The XR pro series is for someone looking for a lower ball flight with a little less spin. Both clubs are very forgiving but the standard XR is more likely to suit a player looking for consistency and help getting the ball up and flying. Needless to say the distance of both is outrageous and is a must try if you're looking to upgrade your clubs this year. To book a fitting please click here.

Immediate visual feedback in all lessons.

Visual AidThe iPad Air together with the excellent V1 golf app is also something I will be using in the vast majority of my lessons. It allows me to give you, immediate visual feedback and comparisons with professional's swings whilst actually on the range with you.

This has already proved a success and has made it even easier to show golfers the desired swing positions we're trying to get to, and how we can do it.

Add this to brief post lesson e-mailed notes and you have an unbeatable combination.

I look forward to helping you improve your golf, to book a lesson or custom fit please click here.

GC2 Proving to be a Massive Success

After investing in a state of the art launch monitor earlier this year, I can safely say this has been one of the best golfing purchases I've ever made. Instant feedback to the Ipad Aire lets me communicate very simply to the player why we're seeing the shot distance/curvature that we're seeing. From here it's a case of trying other clubs as comparisons and chatting through the figures we see so that the player is on the same page and not in the dark.

This has really revolutionised the fitting process and leaves no stone unturned. If you'd like to improve your golf with a set of custom fit clubs/woods then click here to get in touch.

Young Guns Academy with the Golf Foundation Junior Golf Passport.
Our junior coaching on a Saturday morning is undergoing a big change! To help get our juniors to the 'next level' quicker, we're changing the format from an hour long group lesson, to 30 minute individual lessons. This means that with the help of the Golf Foundation Junior Passport Scheme we can make the coaching specific for the needs of the junior at hand.
The Junior Golf Passport covers the following key areas of golf:

The price for a half hour lesson is £10.00 (Under age 12) can be booked at your convenience and can be taken any day/time (as long as we have a member of staff free). This should hopefully be more convenient as we know some of you struggle to stick to the 10am Saturday time as you have other commitments.
