Greetings from John Green

Team Championships

Tom Irwin, Dan Murphy, and Chris Gray produces a sublime team performance to win the 6th division team champs last week. The team won by a huge 6 shots! Tom managed to card the 36 hole score of the day - gross 72 and 74 on a wet, windy and cold day at Kirbymoorside. Dan and Chris were not far behind though, a quite staggering performance.

Well done to the team - next step is the 5th division on the 20th May at Catterick Golf Club. They are going to be playing 36 holes, and the players are teeing off at 7:40, 7:50 and 8:00. If you'd like to cheer them on you are more than welcome.

On a side-note, this is a great result for the AIZ! Dan's had some putting lessons with me, Jack's giving Tom lessons, and Chris had a Callaway driver/wood fitting a couple of weeks ago resulting in two purchases!

Ladies May Stableford

Sue Mason produced a sparkling display to take the ladies May Stableford with 34 points. That score was exceptional given the pretty dire conditions out there - the rain came in sideways at times! Sue's card was ridiculously good and the handicap was rightly chopped from 21 to 20.

Sue's playing partner, Jane Levine, took the bronze division with a tally of 31 points. Another great score in the conditions, I think we can safely say anything of 30+ was a great score. Well done to you both.

Cyril Banks Trophy

Winners of monthly Medals & Stablefords from the past year were eligible to play in the Cyril Banks Trophy on Saturday. With this in mind, it was going to be a tough competition to win, but, Chris Gray managed to take it. Following on from the Scratch team champs, Chris put in a very solid performance from the white tees, scoring a gross 76 nett 74.

Second spot went to Miles Ladlow, missing out by 1 shot with a nett 75. Third spot was taken by Nick Richardson by virtue of a better back 9 than Gordon Gilchrist.

White Tee Medal

On a wet, windy and blustery day we had 59 brave competitors battle the White Tee Medal! The winner was Paul Phillips with a gross 78, nett 72. That's a superb round from the white tees, and Paul rightly had his handicap chopped down to 5.5, surely 5 in no time.

Second place was taken by Mr consistent - David Knaggs. David's always posting scores around his handicap, so it's great to see him get cut back down to 12 with a nett 73. This was followed with a winter winds knockout match win the following day, so Dave's a man to avoid at all costs at the moment! He just held off the charging Ian Farrer and Chris Gray, who both shot 74. Chris' better back nine meant he scooped the third placed prize though.

Ladies Open Day

Despite some less-than-great weather for the ladies open day, it was a great success. The first half of the draw certainly had it best, but that didn't stop the winners from being one of the final groups of the day - an amazing result considering they battled the elements for almost half of their round.

A special thank you to the Alwoodley Ladies that manned the halfway house, providing a plethora of treats and soft drinks. - An even bigger thank you for providing Joe, Jack and I with some cakes and shortbread! Please see the results from the day below.

John - So often I see players getting glancing blows on the golf ball, cutting across it and getting too much curvature. It's hard to fix this in 50 words, but a lesson would do the job!

Joe - For pitching/chipping get the ball in the middle of your stance. This will help stop fats/thins.

Jack - Summer's here! The Tommy Hilfiger range we stock is perfect on/off course wear and is both fashionable and comfortable.

Summer Knockouts

The Summers Knockout competitions are now in full swing but I notice some matches are already slipping past the, 'to be played by' deadlines. The Golf Sub Committee now headed by Steve Banks have asked me to remind competitors that it is the reasonability of both players/teams to contact each other to arrange each game so please don't wait for the player/team at the top of the draw to get into touch. If Steve has not been contacted by the deadline date then both parties will be scratched. However should Steve be contacted then he will consider an extension but this will not exceed two weeks. Competitors are also reminded that it is the responsibility of both players to make sure the result is written on the notice board.

Fast 9 Competition

On Friday the 22nd May we're holding a fast 9 competition with tee off taking place from 4.30-6.30pm. It's to be played in teams of four playing holes 1-9 and then walking in. There is a post-round supper of Cold Meats & Salads, followed by Cheese & Biscuits. This can be eaten at any time after returning to the clubhouse and is self-service. The presentation of prizes will be done shortly after the last card has been received after play. To enter, you can pop your name down on the notice board in the clubhouse. It'd be great to see lots of you down there!

May Spring Bank Holiday Friends and Family

Coming up on the 25th May is the friends and family competition. It will be a team of 4 comp, open to Gents, Ladies, Juniors and non-members. Non-members are asked to pay a £10 green fee, max 2 guests per group.

Teams can play any time before 1pm and the format is a brilliantly fun 'Alwoodley Shamble.' Essentially, everybody drives off and ALL players play from the picked drive position and play their own balls from thereon. Twist - Each player must contribute at least 4 drives! The pressure really gets put on towards the end of the round, its great fun.

There are no eating arrangements afterwards, but there will be a bar menu as usual. I imagine this will be well attended with plenty of banter and teams milling about! I look forward to seeing you all and the good weather is on order!

Immediate visual feedback in all lessons.

Visual AidThe iPad Air together with the excellent V1 golf app is also something I will be using in the vast majority of my lessons. It allows me to give you, immediate visual feedback and comparisons with professional's swings whilst actually on the range with you.

This has already proved a success and has made it even easier to show golfers the desired swing positions we're trying to get to, and how we can do it.

Add this to brief post lesson e-mailed notes and you have an unbeatable combination.

I look forward to helping you improve your golf, to book a lesson or custom fit please click here.

GC2 Proving to be a Massive Success

After investing in a state of the art launch monitor earlier this year, I can safely say this has been one of the best golfing purchases I've ever made. Instant feedback to the Ipad Aire lets me communicate very simply to the player why we're seeing the shot distance/curvature that we're seeing. From here it's a case of trying other clubs as comparisons and chatting through the figures we see so that the player is on the same page and not in the dark.

This has really revolutionised the fitting process and leaves no stone unturned. If you'd like to improve your golf with a set of custom fit clubs/woods then click here to get in touch.

Young Guns Academy with the Golf Foundation Junior Golf Passport.
Our junior coaching on a Saturday morning is undergoing a big change! To help get our juniors to the 'next level' quicker, we're changing the format from an hour long group lesson, to 30 minute individual lessons. This means that with the help of the Golf Foundation Junior Passport Scheme we can make the coaching specific for the needs of the junior at hand.
The Junior Golf Passport covers the following key areas of golf:

The price for a half hour lesson is £10.00 (Under age 12) can be booked at your convenience and can be taken any day/time (as long as we have a member of staff free). This should hopefully be more convenient as we know some of you struggle to stick to the 10am Saturday time as you have other commitments.
