Breakfast Competition Goes Down to the Wire

Peter Johnston and Lizzy Bousfield took last Sundays breakfast competition by the narrowest of margins from Steve Till and June Stevens. Lizzy and Peter scored 39 points in the ½ combined handicaps Greensomes Stableford from the green tees. The last twelve holes from the pair yielded eleven two pointers and a three pointer… Easy game! Second placers Steve and June were actually in the lead on the 17th tee and really did nothing wrong by finishing by totalling three points on the final two holes, but it let the fast finishers jump ahead. Other notable scores were Sally & Robin Johnson as well as Bernadette and Mike Clark - both pairs scoring 37 pts. Well played to all and thanks again to Jane and Damion Guckian for organising the event.

Ladies Winter Foursomes Final

Angela Brophy and Blanche House prevailed in the Winter Foursomes final against Christine Thomas and Christine Davidson. Congratulations to both pairs on a hard fought final and a good run to get there. Angela Brophy and Christine Davidson have had lessons recently, and Christine Thomas has just purchased a new set of PING irons from the AIZ - hopefully this is a start of a great year for you all.

Yorkshire Regain the Title

Yorkshire broke their bad run and took the title in Saturdays 'Yorkshire 'V' The Rest of the World' competition. The top five Stableford scores from both groups of players were pitted against each other to give us a final score, which read Yorkshire 178 - 175 ROW. The top over all scorer was John Gribbon (ROW) with 37 points. John was out in a staggering 21 points and followed that up with some very solid play on the back nine to have a blobless card.

It would seem John's golf is better than his posing!

The other pay out positions: Top Yorkshire scorer was Howard Kew, who carded 36 points and just pipped Mike Banks on a count back. Top ROW scorer behind John Gribbon was Randall Casson, who was chuffed with his 36pts and Winter Winds improvement Before I forget… Special thanks to all the Yorkshire folk for paying the entrance fee, I was slightly concerned but you all stumped up in the end!

Captain/Pro Match

This week Paul Hill and John Mate stepped in to the ring to take on Nigel and I and what a superb game we had. After a par at the first was good enough for us to take the lead a birdie fest began with only three of the next nine holes being won or halved with a par! Nigel and John halved the second in threes I birdied the third, Nigel made three at the fifth, John made three at the sixth, John and I birdied the eight and Paul and John made a good net birdies on the 10th. Actually Johns four at the 10th was made in a slightly less orthodox manner than his partner. He smashed his drive with his 'Rambo' like power straight through the dog leg in to the trees but after hitting just the right tree at just the right angle the ball took a massive ricochet 90 degrees to the left and travelled some 70 yards further down the fairway. Needless to say Nigel and I were delighted for John! The challengers birdies at the 10th meant that Nigel and I were pegged back to just one up and that slender lead disappeared when Paul made a solid net birdie on the 12th. The Capt/Pro partnership then stepped up a gear to win the next three holes only to watch Hillyand Matey win the next two. So for the fourth time in the last seven matches we went down the final hole with the game still to be decided. I played the 18th well and needed two putts from 20 feet to win the match. The ever helpful Paul said he hoped I wouldn't blast the first putt miles past and I laughed a nervously and duly left it four feet short! But my luck was in as I slotted the putt to take the match, phew! John and Paul, the captain and I had a whale of a time thanks for the game.

Nice pose chaps!

Your Pro Shop 'Buys Yorkshire' and 'Buys British'

I hope I am like most of you when I say I like to buy 'local' whenever possible. So I thought I would give you an insight into a few of the local companies I deal with.

Stromberg Trousers are based just down the road, in Brighouse. Established in 1977 by keen golfer Rodney Taylor, now joined by his son Richard, Stromberg strive to use local suppliers with over 75% of their fabrics manufactured in Yorkshire. I have been a big supporter and wearer of the Stromberg ranges for years now and cannot recommend them highly enough.

Last year we started stocking Glenbrae for most of our crested garments. Glenbrae are a brilliant company who work out of a traditional mill in Huddersfield and specialize in high quality knitwear stocked by many of the elite golf courses in the country.

JL Brooks who are based in Armley, supply us with drinks for the fridge and FW Bishops from Bradford supply us with confectionery. Both companies are very local, and on many occasions will provide me with a next day delivery.

Should you take up the AIZ Full Game Assessment?

After not playing much for a few years due to family, work commitments and a lack of confidence Paul Fox decided it was time to get his game back in order. So Paul booked in at the AIZ for the Full Game Assessment. After meeting up with me, completing the questionnaire and playing a few holes while I took video images of Pauls game I then wrote up the Assessment and suggested a Plan of Action. Paul was delighted with this and the e-mail he sent confirmed to me that this great service really works.

'Evening John, many thanks for these notes.
I've really enjoyed reading them, and seeing the supporting visuals which I've found very helpful. I'm so pleased to see the grip thing so obviously as I now realise I have got the completely wrong thing in my mind, as my left hand is the problem, not my right as I thought so simple.
Also I now fully see the alignment issue which I've always known was an issue.
Equally enlightening is the left knee issue, staggering to see it so obviously portrayed on film and especially when you see how it should be done.
Can't wait to get stuck into those issues and better understand them and some possible drills to use for practice. I feel better already from reading the notes and knowing not everything is completely a lost cause and that actually confidence and practice are down to me.
I'm very committed to getting stuck into it this year and just need some pointers to be working on. I will also commit to the drills and stats you have suggested as I really do need to understand the relevance and accountability better.
Many thanks really appreciate those comments and heads up. It was important for me to see all the issues and the connectivity in context. Looking forward to getting on the range, and then shortly thereafter the course.
Many thanks again
Paul'

A happy Paul on the range ready to get down to some work and an excerpt from his notes.

Fun and Games for Junior Golfers at Alwoodley

Our fun Saturday morning junior lessons are ongoing each week at 10am. With each session being an hour long and coached by myself and or Joe there have been some good turnouts in the recent weeks but there is still room for more! These lessons are a great way to meet other juniors, have fun and just get into golf. Age's four to twelve of all levels are welcome to attend and Mums, Dads and grandparents are invited to try some of the fun games. We hope to see some more young talent to add to the great potential we already have.

Is Time to Change Your Wedges?

I recently ran a small experiment with my new GC2 Launch Monitor. I was looking to see how older wedges with more worn grooves affect the amount of spin you get on the ball. The results were quite dramatic, with the new wedge generating an average just shy of 6,000rpm, the used wedge generating just shy of 5,000rpm, and the well-used wedge generating just over 3,000rpm!

When we hit wedges, the backspin generated is crucial to giving us the control that we need. With that in mind, the rates found from the experiment should be alarming to you if you're playing with some older wedges. The grooves get worn and this has the same effect as getting some grass caught between the club and ball at impact. This creates a shot where the ball will pitch, and then continue to run out. This is all good and well with the driver when we want distance, but with the wedge shots we are looking for control and accuracy.

Think of it like this - when did you last see a pro on TV play a wedge shot from 40+ yards that didn't spin back or 'check-up?' This allows them to negate any chance of an unlucky bounce as they can fly the ball to the hole. If you feel you're not able to be as aggressive as you'd like on your wedge shots, we can check your lofts and spin rates on our new GC2 launch monitor. Furthermore we have a wide selection of wedges with varying bounce and loft angles to suit all golfers. As ever we will be happy to talk you through the process and explain what will best suit your game - please feel free to ask for our help when you're next in the shop or click here to send me an email

Exciting Technology Comes to the AIZ!

I've recently decided to invest in a Foresight GC2 Launch Monitor. The GC bit stands for 'Game Changer,' and it really is…

I've combined the GC2 with a brand new iPad Air, also. These two combined is the same piece of kit Ian Poulter uses for his tournament preparation week in week out. I must say I've been very impressed with it so far, it's set up and ready for action inside five minutes and provides extremely accurate numbers.

The GC2 is something I will be using in all my custom fittings from now on. With all the new demo clubs we've just had delivered (Callaway, TaylorMade, PING, Tour Edge) I'm really aiming to give you all maximum choice of clubs combined with the best service possible. The GC2 allows me to instantly get your numbers sent through to the iPad which means we can both view your shots and are both on the same page as we move towards your game improvement. Not only can we see the shots on the iPad, but hitting balls on the range means you also get the added feedback of seeing the actual shot through the air. It's worth noting I provide the whole custom fitting, including GC2 usage free of charge when you purchase through me.

The iPad Air together with the excellent V1 Golf App is also something I will be using in the vast majority of my lessons. It allows me to give you, immediate visual feedback and comparisons with professional's swings whilst actually on the range with you. This has already proved a success and has made it even easier to show golfers the desired swing positions we're trying to get to, and how we can do it. Add this to brief post lesson e-mailed notes and you have an unbeatable combination. I look forward to helping you improve your golf, to book a lesson or custom fit please click here.

Breakfast Competition
Sunday the 23rd March

The next date for your diaries is the well supported breakfast competition. This time, event organiser, Jane Guckian is planning a Green Tee Greensomes Stableford, half combined handicap with ladies receiving two bonus strokes.
The full English breakfast is being served from 9am until 10am and the golf commencing from 9:30am.
The cost including the breakfast is only  £9.50 per player and if you wish to play pop your names on the notice board or click here and we will do that for you.

A Full English Breakfast and a round of golf the perfect combination.

Easter Foursomes Entry NOW OPEN

Entries for the Easter Foursomes are now being taken in the pro shop. The qualifying takes place on Friday the 18th April and is to be played in pairs, with half combined handicaps.

The four pairs that score the most Stableford points will qualify for the match play competition. Semi-final matches are to be played on Saturday 19th April with the final to be played on the 20th or 21st. In the event of a tie for 4th place in the Stableford, the normal count back procedure will apply.

It is worth noting that for the qualifying round on Friday there is no start sheet. That means pairs should make up their own fourball and play as and when is convenient to them. Cards must be returned to the pro shop by 5:30pm.

Trip to Ladies Open

The Ladies open is this year being held at the fantastic Royal Birkdale. With that in mind, there is a trip being organised for Thursday 10th July, with all members more than welcome to attend. If you're interested in going there is a form up in the clubhouse to attach your names to. If you're unable to get to the club soon, you can contact the pro shop click here and we will put you on the list. I'm sure this should prove popular, as watching the best lady golfers in the world on a lovely summers day sounds like a great day to me!

Old shoes can be just as costly as wrong equipment

Worn golf shoes are dangerous, quite literally. Not only do you risk taking a tumble with tatty shoes, but with balance compromised, what chance does your swing have? You could be nicely fitted for the best clubs but with traction a problem that could all be in vain.
