Greetings from John Green | Alwoodley Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional | Winter Winds Final
It's super Ed Smith that has won the winter winds! Ed came out on top against Gordy MacGregor in a thrilling final knockout match, winning one up after 18 holes of great golf. Gordon got off to a great start, level through six holes and Ed was four down! However, Ed then rallied and amazingly didn't drop a single shot for the rest of the round. Gordon hung in there making solid pars with Ed, and the pair found themselves all square on the 16th tee.
Gordon just missed holing his bunker shot birdie attempt on 16, meaning both made pars again. It was the same down the 17th meaning this was going the distance. At 7:30pm and the night drawing in, Gordon was left with a tricky seven footer downhill to take it to the 19th. Unfortunately for Gordon it slipped by, giving Ed a superb victory. Fantastic Ed, congrats - unlucky Gordon, you've won enough this year to sleep OK at night though!
Another Day in Paradise..
Last Thursday I got this snapshot of the light beaming down onto the course. Sometimes I forget how beautiful our course really is!
Men's Invitation Day
What an amazing finish we had for Invitation Day! With torrential downpours early on, then some gusty winds later, it was hard to know whether the early or late finishers had it best. In an extremely closely run contest, we had Will Shucksmith and guest Andrew Gardner atop the pile with 39 points. They just edged David Sparke and Darren Short into second via countback on the last six holes.
Third home were Powell Rose and his guest J Worrell who ALSO scored 39 points! These two were too good on the front nine for their own good, meaning their back nine wasn't quite able to match up to the winners.
Well done to the top three, that's good going in the tricky conditions. Unlucky to David Sparke and guest though who were leading all the way up until the very, very end. What can we say.. it's typical Will Shucksmith, always winning!
- Card checking from Graeme Lee and Will.
Straightest drive went to John Mate, naturally. Who bombed his drive down the 18th both long and straight! Nearest the pin went to Bob Davis' guest, Jim McCarry. Well done to you both!
Oh, and the Beat the Pro was great fun - Jack was out injured this year with a back problem so Joe and I had elongated stints… A couple of notable winners were Darren Short, David Sparkes partner who hit it to a foot and Graeme Lee struck a majestic iron that hit the bottom of the pin and I don't know how it didn't go in. Great to watch chaps. Anybody that bet and won will be obviously be charged extra on all future purchases!!
Lady Captain & Professional Challenge
With Julie and I having busy seasons we only managed to arrange three matches over the summer and the last of these was played last Wednesday. When we saw our opponents, Debbie Haworth & Karen Hogarth and with us yet to chalk up a win we felt that we had to play our very best to get a result.
Julie and I made a fast start to be two up but then the Howarth/Hogarth machine started to roll. Debbie made a nett eagle on the third and when both players made nett birdies on the fourth and sixth Julie and I found ourselves one down. I then found some real form and after nearly holing my tee shot at the seventh I birdied the eighth and we were gifted the 10th to get to two up. From the 11th to the 15th I made threes on each hole but amazingly that was only good enough to get us to three up. This was mainly due to Debbie making a spectacular nett two on the 12th and then another nett two on the 14th! However when the 16th was halved Julie and I were delighted to take our first full point. Debbie and Karen you were a great to play with and I really enjoyed your company.
Julie as your year draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity to thank you very much for your help and support and you have been a pleasure to partner in the matches.

The Pro's Winter Comps
I know, I know… I can't quite believe it either, but it's time to start advertising the upcoming fun winter competitions. I've set aside a few Saturdays for us all to play some quirky and fun favourites! The first one is on Saturday 24th October. This is right in the middle of the rugby world cup that England will be beating Ireland in the final of… so naturally, we're holding the AGC favourite 'Rugby Competition'. It's the one where you pick holes to score a try on and then you get a conversion chance on the next hole… It's actually very simple yet great fun - I'll explain more nearer the time.
Following that is my favourite - the Greenkeepers Revenge! It's the week after the Rugby comp (31st Oct) and you better believe the pins are going to be in the wackiest positions possible. On a serious note, please bare this in mind when arranging club matches.
There will be 10 fun comps throughout the winter, of which 7 count towards the Winter Order of Merit. 2014/15's top 5 finishers are below:

Men's Winter Foursomes Entries

Entries close on Sunday 4th October so there's not much time to get yourselves sorted and ready. First round matches are to be played by Sunday 8th November.

Super September
Well what a fun-packed month the Alwoodley Improvement Zone has planned for you in September!
- FootJoy Shoe Fitting
On Saturday 19th September we're running a 'Footjoy Shoe Fitting Day.' Now this stat may surprise you… 70% (70%!!!!) of golfers are wearing the wrong size golf shoe. Ill-fitting shoes cause poor connection with the ground, resulting in the base/balance of your swing being off. When tested this can cause up to a 26% drop in swing power.
Don't make this mistake! Come to our fitting day, get precisely tested and know that you're wearing the correct style/size of shoe for you.
- Best Chipper Championship
Following on from the putting, we'll be holding the 'Alwoodley Chipping Championship' on Saturday Saturday 26th September. This event was won last year by Powell Rose, a true cream of the short game crop! So come on, get yourself down and pit your wits against your fellow members in this friendly competition. Like the putting competition, there will be a £1 entry that goes to the Lady Capt's Charity, as well as a handicap system to keep everything nice and fair. |
