Bobbie Till Romps In

In the April Medal it was a rocky start for eventual winner Bobbie Till, who was two over her handicap for the first three holes. Bobbie then kicked into gear however and managed to play the remaining holes very soldly, in one under her handicap. Bobbie recently had a couple of lessons with Joe, in which they worked on Bobbie's weight transfer in order to get her a better strike on her golf shots. It would seem it's worked as Bobbie's handicap is now at it's lowest since April 2012!

In second over all place, and winner of the Silver division was Linda Carvell. Linda, who is also under Joe's tutelage shot a nett 75 to get her handicap cut by a shot. Linda's highlight was definitely a very valuable two on the 14th! Well played to Linda and Bobbie on your scores and it looks like the AIZ strikes again!

Shoe Deal …..

Our shoe offer has been underway for roughly a week now, and many of you have taken me up on the opportunity to get £20 for your old shoes. In case you're not sure what the deal is, I'm giving anyone £20 off a new pair of FootJoy shoes when they trade in an old pair. That means now's the time to get rummaging around in the loft for those 20 year old golf shoes you never got around to binning!

The offer is only running for a couple more weeks so make sure you take advantage of this while you can.

Callaway Demo Day

Coming up on Friday 2nd May is our Callaway Demo Day, 2.00pm - 5.30pm. We will have a special visit from a Callaway Custom Fit guru who has numerous different shafts, clubs, heads etc for you to test out and try. There will also be up to the minute launch monitors giving you precise figures on how far you're hitting all the clubs as well as spin rates etc so we can fine tune the clubs to your game. Click here to book your place.

Junior Day

On Sunday Junior Organiser, Richard Larking and I held the first Junior Spring Meeting and a great success it was. Before playing we had bacon sandwiches then three four balls with a mixture of Juniors and adults set out on to the course for a Six Hole competition best two from four Stableford and Jemma Reed, James Candlish, Tony Byrne and Richard Larking came out on top with an incredible 31 points. The runners up with another great score of 29pts were Tom Candlish, Jack Byrne, Andy Candlish and Rob Semple. My team that consisted of Will Candlish, Teddy Semple and Oliver Larking did really well and finished in bronze position. Then after the golf there was sandwiches and cakes in the dinning room along with a chipping competition which was won by James Candlish. All in all it was very worth while holding the event and I am sure the juniors had lots of fun.

Fun and Games for Junior Golfers at Alwoodley

Our fun Saturday morning junior lessons are ongoing each week at 10am. With each session being an hour long and coached by myself and or Joe there have been some good turnouts in the recent weeks but there is still room for more! These lessons are a great way to meet other juniors, have fun and just get into golf. Age's four to twelve of all levels are welcome to attend and Mums, Dads and grandparents are invited to try some of the fun games. We hope to see some more young talent to add to the great potential we already have.

The Capt - Pro Challenge matches are coming thick and fast now as Nigel and I took on Julian Pitts and Richard Hartley last week. After I played poorly in the Pro Am a few days before I did not tee up for this match with much confidence but as we know golf is a funny game and this was confirmed as I played great and holed a succession of putts to make six birdies on the front nine. Our challengers hung in there very well with a few birdies of their own and limited the damage to just three down at the half way stage. The spectacular shot of the day came when Rick's approach to the 13th struck the pin and finished a foot away for a gimmie three to get his team back to just two down. Then when Julian, with a stroke hit a decent shot to the 14th it looked like the come back was on but I hit good tee shot to 20 feet and rolled in the putt for my seventh birdie which was a great thrill for me but I am sure Rick and Julian had had enough of me! Actually this seemed to sap all the fight from challenging two as they pretty much gifted us the 15th for a four and three victory. Julian and Rick you played some good stuff and we had some fun, thanks for the game.

The challengers in our penultimate match were Mike Sleath and Ron Brassington and by all accounts they had been talking tactics for weeks before the big game. In an attempt to throw Nigel and I off our game Mike and Ron decided we should play from the Yellow Tees apart from the 2nd, 12th and 16th where we would play from the green tees and then around Alwoodley's 'Amen Corner' the 8th, 9th and 10th we would play from the championship tees. This plan looked to be working a treat as our opponents stormed to a three up lead after eight holes courtesy of some outstanding play and putting mainly from Mike. Even a gimmie two on the seventh from Nigel, after nearly holing his tee shot wasn't good enough as Mike smacked in another 15 footer. A par on the monster 9th did get us back to two down. Then something clicked in my swing as I birdied the next three holes to get the game back to all square and then a par on the 13th sneaked us ahead for the first time in the game. We held this lead until the 17th where a par sealed a two and one victory that looked very unlikely after the first few holes. This was another great scoring game with, net 11 birdies and one eagle between us. Great game chaps.

You can see me here on the first tee eating my banana and I thought you might be interested how I keep my self hydrated and energised through out the round - well this is how.

Hole 1 - Banana & Water.
Hole 5 - Apple & Water.
Hole 8 - Plum and Water.
Hole 11 - Sip of Ron's hip flask (Rocket Fuel) and more Water!!
Hole 12 - Werthers Original from Nigel.
Hole 13 - Chunk of Yorkie and Water.
Hole 15 - Chunk of Yorkie and Water.
Then in the club house after play I ate an excellent chicken and mayo sandwich and for tea, well you get the idea!!

Our Ladies Group Coaching sessions will be fun and friendly making it very easy to give golf a go without feeling at all intimidated. Any fears about not being very good are soon put to rest when you learn that everyone misses it, tops it and sends it sideways to begin with!

We have put together a course of five sessions that last for one hour each and cover all aspects of the game plus rules and etiquette and will even involve going out on the course. You do not need to have any clubs or experience nor do you have to be a member of the golf club.

1. Let's Get Started - On the Green
Introduction to Putting.

2. Around the Green
Introduction to Chipping.

3. The Basics Introduction to the clubs.
The full shot set up and short swing.

4. Building Blocks
Basic Swing Development.

5. On the Course
An on course lesson.

These sessions are a great opportunity to learn a new skill, meet other lady golfers and forge new friendships.

Some of the comments after last years sessions were very positive and pleasing:

"I have been one of six new lady golfers under John's tutelage over the past couple of months. After years of showing no interest or appetite for golf, despite my husband's pestering, I did not expect either to enjoy it or be gripped by the game. Having finally been persuaded to try, John's expert coaching, encouragement and support for us all has completely won me over. More than anything he has made it fun to participate and has provided the impetus for me to continue further. John has put in a terrific amount of thought and effort into the sessions and made us all (as have the Alwoodley lady members) feel very welcome at the club. I might even have improved along the way!!"
Janet Ledger

"Over the last year I have had both individual and group lessons with John. I am a complete beginner at golf so I was very relieved to find a group of friends who were of a similar standard. The lessons have been firstly great fun, instructive and taylor made to each individual. John is very encouraging and the lesson notes he provides give very clear instructions as to what we should be aiming to achieve. The beginner lessons are excellent value and have given me the confidence to continue trying to conquer this game! Thank you John for the very enjoyable lessons , taking up golf has been one of my best New Year resolutions!"
Rosey James

The cost for the course of five sessions is £50.00

Strengthen your woods line-up by filling the gaps

When we see golfers with a full custom-fitted set of woods in their bag, we know they have considered how far they hit each club. Often we can neglect this part of the game at the top end of our bag which costs us valuable shots. Some simple fine-tuning in this area can work wonders.
